Writer’s Guidelines for Lowbagger.org

Lowbagger strives to provide planetary news, kindle the fires of debate, and deliver stimulating entertainment. Beneath our banner a reader will encounter definitive feature stories, extensive and brief news pieces, guest editorials and fiction truer than life. We encourage a variety of styles and tones.  In doing so, the guidelines are subsequently loose. Let the creativity ramble. Lowbagger accepts manuscripts at all times and encourages timely submissions.

We want to cover the environmental buckaroos that are going to be out there on the front lines; the lowbaggers and the high rollers, the lawyers and the lawless, the scrappy small and the big guys in Washington with bad haircuts. So if you are tired of the standard boilerplate environmental propaganda you get online from the Alphabet Organizations, then this site might be for you. And if you are one of the downtrodden laborers working for the big-ten groups in some airless badly lit cubicle, or some federal employee working in a basement for an agency that is kowtowing to the greedy, pig-dog, multinational corporations instead of protecting our environment, or even if you are a bike messenger, consider contributing.

Here’s a list of the E-Zine’s departments and general expectations of each one. Rules are made to be followed, but also broken.

Planetary News
: Planetary news isn’t only structured and informative stories pertaining to the Earth. Literally, the term also means wandering and erratic. We like experimental pieces as much as we like conventional stories. The scope of the news submissions can be global, national or regional, and should be timely. Features are highly desirable and should run 2,000-3,000 words. News articles run roughly 900-1,800 words. News briefs run roughly 400 words. Photos are a plus.

Guest Editorials
: Got something on your mind? This is an opportunity for a reader to share their point of view with others. If you want to rant, go ahead and write a Letter to the Editor. But if you have a longer argument in mind, write a guest editorial. Try and change our mind about something. These pieces tend to run roughly 600-800 words.

Columns/Essays
: Please query Lowbagger with any column or essay idea. We want columns and essays that put people on the ground. Let us peer through a window and into your world. We want real, not refined. We want tales of outdoor adventure as much as we want stories of misdeeds by public officials. No essay or column is too conventional, or too crazy. Columns run 800-1,400 words.

Action Alerts:
Don't assume that Lowbaggers

Fiction: If any department in this E-Zine is boundless, it is certainly fiction. Throw anything at us. We are particularly interested in sense-of-place fiction. Quality will determine length.

Poetry
: Make it political, or make it pretty. Make it edgy, or flowing.

Book Reviews:
We are interested in reviews of recent environmental and outdoor titles. Please include price of the book and the publisher. Book reviews can run 400-1,500 words.

Art
: This is one of the most important components to the entire publication. We are seeking photos and illustrations. Send us a jpeg. See poetry guidelines.
