the natural guard
after a season
of 5
level 5 hurricanes,
a
new cabinet level department
was
created:
the
department of hurricanes,
later
renamed
the
department of natural
disasters,
then
re-renamed
the
department of natural defense.
on a
state level
the
national guard was supplemented
with
the natural guard,
whose
sole duty
was
to protect nature--
everglades,
marshes, wolves,
grizzlies
and eagles and whooping
cranes,
redwoods,
geysers, and canyons.
natural
defense was on everybody's
mind.
government
discovered it had a
mind,
and
remembered how to govern;
and
while there were still category
5 hurricanes,
volcanoes,
tsunamis, 100-year
floods every ten years,
response
was appreciably better,
response
time was way improved,
and
the green uniform of the
natural guard
was
the envy of every schoolkid,
while
natural guardsmen
were
widely recognized
as heroes.
